Whittling Wood

If you enjoy wood and tiny scraps thereof and like to putter around and make useful whatnots, you would probably enjoy whittling. Whittling wood is a great pastime that seems to be slowly falling to the wayside and forgotten by most. The old timers would sit by a wood stove and whittle away while making conversation. Seems that too is gone. A youngster would get a pocket knife as a gift and think he was given the world. Off he would go finding a scarp piece of wood to whittle away his time and the wood while making a slingshot or whatever popped into his head. The reason I write this is to encourage someone who may have interest to do just that. It is a great pastime and as Chris Lubkemann the author of "The Little Book of Whittling" published by Fox Chapel Publishing Company, Inc. (ISBN #978-1-56523-274-7) states on the cover of his book, "Whittling is great for passing time on the trail, on the porch, and under the stars." Boy! Was he ever right? If you are bored with life and want something a little different to do and enjoy nature, go out and get this book, search in your backyard or a wooded area for a few old sticks and whittle away. It will slow you down and give you something new to appreciate. Get a glass of lemonade and sip slowly. Enjoy! You are not the first to enjoy this pastime and you won't be the last but sadly few and fewer get to learn the benefits. Perhaps that will one day change.
