Gardening

  • A Use for Tires
We use old tires for small garden spots whether it is for vegetables, flowers or bushes and they are free. We have even stacked them three high so one does not have to bend over so much. Tractor tires work good as noted in this picture even though car tires are more than sufficient. Just an idea you might consider!
  • Spring Preparation
Yep, we got the garden worked up and it is ready for planting this spring. We put a great deal of manure onto the ground in the fall, left it to rot and worked it in by roto-tilling the ground well this spring. As you note the manure pile to the side, it seems we always have an excess of manure from a few chickens and a couple of goats. This manure will be put on the garden in the fall and left there for the following spring to repeat the cycle. We do a litle square foot gardening (note the square wooden boxes built from lumber gotten at a local sawmill) as well as the old fashioned conventional style. It's fun to try a little of all types of ways in gardening. Truthfully, we just don't seem to have the green thumb that others have but we enjoy what we get. Some of it may be that we do not get as much sun on the garden as we'd like even though we have cut many trees. To get the amount of sun required would take a lot of tree cutting around us and we hate to waste the wood. Gardening is kinda like making love....ya just do the best ya can with what ya got!
  • Spring Onions
Noted here are a few of the spring onions we planted and they are coming up nicely.
  • A Tomato plant
Here is a picture of a tomato plant that is supposed to give very large tomatoes. I reckon we'll see what they give further on down the road as the summer comes in.
  • Peonies
Just thought you might enjoy the Peonies we have at southwest corner of the garden. We do!
  • Strawberries
Thought maybe I could make you hungry for good ole home grown strawberries if I shared a picture. Here you see a small strawberry patch we have and they sure are sweet and good if we can get them before the squirrels do. Not sure if the picture shows the little red berries though but there are some there.
